Description
Antique Anglo-Indian Carved Teak Charpoy Coffee Table
This exceptional antique charpoy coffee table is a rare and authentic example of Western Indian craftsmanship, likely originating from the Gujarat or Rajasthan regions during the late 19th to early 20th century. It beautifully bridges traditional Indian vernacular design with Anglo-Indian colonial influence, resulting in a piece that is both historically significant and visually striking.
Expertly constructed from solid teak wood (Tectona grandis, attributed), the table has developed a rich, warm patina over time, highlighting the natural grain and depth of the timber. Teak was highly prized in Indian furniture making for its strength, durability, and resistance to insects, making it the preferred hardwood for long-lasting heirloom pieces.
The frame is adorned with finely hand-carved geometric and rosette motifs, including repeating starburst patterns that are characteristic of Gujarati and Rajasthani decorative traditions. These carvings are executed with precision and rhythm, reflecting the skill of regional artisan workshops that specialised in both domestic and colonial-era furniture.
Brass corner fittings and original iron ring handles enhance both the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of the piece, while elegantly turned legs introduce a refined colonial-era silhouette. Together, these elements reflect the fusion of indigenous Indian craftsmanship with European design influence during the colonial period.
At its centre, the piece retains its original hand-woven charpoy base, created using natural fibre cord in a traditional herringbone weave. This weaving technique, commonly used in khatiya (charpoy) daybeds across Rajasthan and Gujarat, adds authenticity and cultural depth. Originally designed as a low sleeping platform or daybed, the piece has been thoughtfully repurposed as a coffee table, ideally suited for a protective glass top.
Today, it functions beautifully as a statement centrepiece—bringing texture, history, and warmth into both contemporary and traditional interiors. Its combination of carved detail, aged teak, and woven craftsmanship makes it highly desirable for collectors of Anglo-Indian furniture, colonial antiques, and decorative Indian artefacts.
